Rei Hyūga (日向レイ ', Hyuga Rei) was a jōnin-level shinobi of Konohagakure's Hyūga Clan, and the previous leader of Team 16 .

History

Like his brother, Tokuma Hyūga, Rei was born into the branch family of the Hyūga Clan in the years leadering up to the Third Shinobi World War.  Although he was young, Rei recalled seeing both his parents leave for the battlefield, only to never return. From that point on, Rei was raised by his elder brother and by his other clansmen.

At the age of ten, Rei had his forehead branded with the main branch's sealing technique by the Clan leader Hiashi Hyūga , as per the family custom. His brother would often warn him to not stir up a fuss, but believing that such practises were inhumane and unjust, Rei was very vocal about his distaste for his own clan and it's traditions. This rebellious attitude eventually got him into trouble with the main branch, resulting an activation of his curse seal. After this incident, Rei's ill-will and bitterness towards his clan only grew throughout his adolescence. 

Personality

Rei has a very frivolous, carefree personality. Initially, he was against being a shinobi, and was very rebellious towards his clan's stern and serious ways.

In adulthood, he is known to be unreliable, irresponsible and frankly unfit to be a jonin leader. Neither is he a good example to his underclassmen or juniors. Ultimately, Rei shows little interest in the missions assigned to his team, and often makes detours and side trips to bars, hotels, and other age restricted establishments (earning him a sharp scolding from his students.) The man is also an avid smoker and drinker.

Rei refers to the death of his genin student Fuyuki as "the biggest wake up call of his life". Henceforth, Rei's character matures profoundly. He begins to form a more intimate relationship with his remaining team members and owns up to his errors as a leader. He still has a tendancy to get side tracked with a poor sense of priority, but it is evident that he actually cares for his students and would do his best to give them the best experience.

Appearence

Rei is a young man of average height and weight. He has fair skin and like the rest of his clansmen, possesses the renowned Byakugan, which when activated, stimulates the veins and arteries immediately around his eyes to protrude more prominently.

Rei was originally born with brown hair, and during his genin years, he kept it mid-back length in a loose ponytail. When he was promoted to Chunin, he cut his hair short and colored it dark with a portion of his bangs colored white. He did this because he thought brown hair looked too normal and he wanted to be "rebellious" against his family's traditional ways. 

As a member of the Branch House, Rei has the seal branded on his forhead. As a Genin and Chunin, he wore his forehead protector over it. Since promoted to Jonin, he casts a constant Transformation Jutsu on himself, that makes the seal disappear from his forehead. He wears the standard Konoha flak jacket, over a rolled up, long sleeve shirt. Both his hands are covered in bandages.

Abilities

Visual Prowess

Like all the wielders of the Byakugan he has near 360° of vision (with the exception of a small blind spot at the upper thoracic vertebrae), as well as the ability to see through objects, the ability to see the chakra pathway system and amongst other things.

Taijutsu

With the Byakugan, Rei could see individuals' chakra pathway systems and the 361 tenketsu that run along it. Using the Hyūga's signature Gentle Fist fighting style, he could attack an opponent's chakra system directly, constricting or cutting off their chakra flow from only minimal contact. Because the chakra pathway system is closely intertwined with many of the body's major organs, debilitating and even fatal damage can be done just as easily. He evenutally passed this style of taijutsu onto his student, Ren. (Sans the abilities allowd by byakugan.)

Part II

Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance Mission

In Part II, Team 16 was first seen resting within the Dango Shop after a long mission. While eating, Rei remembered hearing that Team Kakakashi had returned from a mission in Sunagakure, and is later bewildered as to why Nadeshiko runs of upon the mention of Sasori.

Pain's Assault

Rei and his team were together when the fall of Konoha began. Immediately, Rei ordered his students to help evacuate the villagers from the war zone. Rei then regrouped with his fellow clan member, Kō and together they were tasked to protect Hinata Hyuga. When Pain activated the Shinra Tensei to flatted and destroy the entire village, Rei was instantly killed upon impact. But was then brought back to life using Pain's resurrection technique.

Fourth Shinobi World War

When the Fourth Shinobi World War began, Rei is placed in the Second Division.

Post-Shippuden

Four years after the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Team Rei had set out on a A-rank mission to the Land of Iron, where they were tasked to spy on and gather information on a missing-nin of the Leaf Village who had gone joined the samurai clan. Upon confrontation, The missing-nin, Kota, engaged into a battle. Midway, reinforcements from the enemy were called upon, greatly outnumbering the three man squad. Caught between a two attacks from the flank, one on the left,  and three at the front, Rei had no choice but to use his all of his chakra to perform Palm Revolving Heaven. The enemy appeared to have been defeated, allowing Rei to let down his guard for a moment. In that instance, he was attacked from behind by an unknown long range jutsu, turning just in time to intercept the projectile at his face.

Rushed back to the Konoha Hospital with nothing but first-aid treatment, Rei then underwent an emergency operation under the supervision of Sakura Haruno. As a result, Rei was left completely blind in his right eye with little sight in his left, but was able to survive. This incident forced Rei to retire completely from his duties as a shinobi, as medically advised by Sakura and as ordered by the Sixth Hokage, Kakashi Hatake.

• Rei's favorite drink is Mijiu rice wine. His least favorite is green tea.
• Rei wished to fight Neji Hyūga.
• Rei's hobbies include bar hopping, skirt-chasing, and sleeping in the fields.
• Rei has completed 521 official missions in total: 101 D-rank, 219 C-rank, 138 B-rank, 20 A-rank, and 1 S-rank.
